Tamil M.A - Katrathu Tamil

If your are in a category of movie goer who love films with heroism, songs with 100 dancers, fast beat song, separate comedy track this is not a film for you. But then if you want to feel the film even after coming out of the theatre, want unpredictable screenplay, social message, mesmerizing songs that goes along with film, this is the film for you.

M R film production 'Katrathu tamil' is a debut film by director Ram with Jeeva and Anjali in lead role and of course for latter this is debut movie. The director took heavy subject in his very first film and did his job neatly. Story goes with the name of the film, hero did degree in tamil and unable to settle in good job. Meanwhile few strangers interfere in his life and made terrible. Finally social impact turns him psycopath who commits numerous murder. Jeeva's performance is excellent and surely this film is going to be his masterpiece in his career. All others performance are natural and did their job neatly.

Apart from ilaiyaraja tamil film industry got another good music director who is capable giving extra-ordinary music for this type of unsual script. Yuvan scores both in songs and BGM's. All the songs were beautifully composed, but 'Paravaiye' which was excellently sung by Maestro ilaiyaraja rings in the ears even after coming out of theatre.

The screenplay is good, many scenes cannot be predetermine by audience. Even though very slow screenplay suits for this story many audience left the theatre in half the film. Dialogues is some scenes were not clearly audible, i dont know why director didn't noticed it. The director also dicussed the real impact of IT industry in the country but he would have discussed more clearly. But anyway the film is worth watching.

Bottom line - bravery attempt by debut director.

Satham podathey – Sounds better

Hello folks, if you are bored by movies with punch dialogues, kuthu songs, and violent fights get ready to watch ‘Satham podathey’. Director Vasanth who usually gives us romance movies this time coupled romance with thriller and did his job neatly. Let me come to story, Banu (Padmapriya) marries Rathnavelu (‘Nithin Sathya’ Chennai 28 fame) but after 3 months she came to know that Rathnavelu is impotent then decided to adopt a child. She was shocked by the news that his husband is impotent drunker which he already knows well before their marriage. They decided to go for divorce.

Banu falls in love with Ravichandran(Prithiviraj)and latter performance is really excellent but reminds few scenes of ‘Mozhi’. They finally ended in wedding knot but soon after wedding their life is interfered by rathnavelu as he turns psychopath and rest you can guess. You can appreciate vasanth in many scenes for his directorial touch.All the actors did their job well but splendid performance by Padmapriya and Nithin Sathya.

The heart of the movie is Yuvan’s music, he again proved him as best composer. His BGM speaks in many scenes but at few instances reminds ‘Kadhal kondean’ BGM. Anyway hats off to Yuvan for his brilliant songs, of all songs ‘Pesugirean’ is superb melody penned by Na. Muthu kumar and this song is brilliantly placed two times in the movie at exact situation. Debut camera man Dinesh kumar scores in many scenes especially in first song ‘Alagu kutti chellam’. We should the praise the director’s guts for not placing even a single fight scene in a thriller movie.

Bottom line – ‘Satham podathey’ Musically sound movie.

Masterpiece BGM’s of Music Maestro

Background Music (BGM) acts as a marrow to any successful movie. To compose BGM’s to a film the composer have to clearly understand the situation and have to select particular raga and instruments which could express the exact temper of the situation. Composing BGM’s to a movie is exigent work to any composer than to compose songs. An average composer can give very good songs but only highly skilled composer could able to give excellent BGM’s. Since Maestro ilaiyaraja have mastered music theory it is not a surprise that he gives masterpiece BGM’s.

I am going to thrash out two pieces of BGM’s from two different movies. The first one is my all-time favorite movie ‘Aan pavam’ staring Pandiarajan and of course it is his second directorial venture. The movie is based on village love story with first-rate comedy scenes. The second movie is ‘Guna’, splendid recital from universal hero Kamalhassan. Both the movies were taken to greater summit by Maestro through his magical music.

Let’s see a scene from ‘Aan pavam’ movie first. Pandian (hero of the movie) goes to seetha’s (Heroin of the movie) home (In tamil this sequence is called as ‘Ponu paakarathu’). This scene exactly reveals the tamil culture and hence I love this particular scene very much. Since bride and bridegroom are going to meet first time in this scene, the composer have to express their feelings i.e. Expectation, happiness, Shy (This is a beautiful element of typical tamil girl, in tamil it is called as ‘Vetkam’) through his music. Maestro uses Flute, violin, Veenai, drums to express these feelings, flute piece in the entire scene is really mind boggling. As the alliance confirms there exists sense of happiness with everyone and it is clearly expressed by Maestro by veenai followed by nathaswaram and Miruthangam (Traditional instrument used in south Indian marriages).

The next movie is ‘Guna’, it is a very different assay in tamil cinema. Usually tamil cinema shows beautiful hero who will have couple of duet songs with heroin, some sentiment scenes and at last do some bizarre things to kill the enemy. But this movie is very different, the hero is mentally disturbed who thinks himself as god and plans to marry Abirami on full moon day. Totally it is a tough script and the Maestro’s music is mind boggling through the entire movie. I am going to discuss a piece of music in the film to reveal Maestro’s brilliant work. Let me explain the situation, the hero kidnaps heroin in to a forest to marry her. One day the heroin wants to take bath, so hero takes her to a stream, violin orchestra takes over the guitar when she sees the stream (Maestro used Sudhha Dhanyasi raga in western style, @courtesy: Mr.Rajendra) which exactly express the feel as one saw a huge stream of water with surprise. When she puts her feet in to the water the western flute sings with joy. I am sure when you closely hear the music you will have sense of joy as one could have while bathing in big stream.

Music Maestro Ilaiyaraja

Tamil film industry had seen very many music composers in the past several decades. M.S. Viswanathan, K.V. Mahadevan, Maestro Ilaiyaraja, Vidya sagar, A.R. Rehman, Yuvan sankar raja are to name a few notable composers who made their music prints strongly not only in people’s ears but also in their hearts. Of all these composers Ilaiyaraja is very special composer and his composition can withstand the test of time. Ilayaraja occupies a special page in the book of music. He is a prolific composer with sound basic knowledge in music. Over the span of 30 years he did more than 900 films in different Indian languages with an average of 30 films per year which is a nightmare for any other composer in the industry and he also done so many experimentations in music which are quite interesting. His orchestration to any song is such perfect that stands as example to present day composers. He is master in expressing feelings through music and all of his Background music (BGMs) stands as proof for that. He took so many films to greater height through his BGM, Ann pavam, Nooravadhu Naal, Kadhaluku Mariyadhai, Pithamagan, Guna, Thalapathi, Tik Tik Tik, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, Sindhu bhairavi, Agni natchathiram, Aboorava sagotharargal, Heyram, Mouna ragam, Siraichalai, Virumandi, the list is endless. This is a very small introduction about Maestro and I am going to write his musical wonders now and then.

Astrology - to be believed or not

Long time back when I was doing my UG, I wrote an article in “Guindy times” along with my friend saravana kumar. I would like to share the article to everyone.

As science advances, we realize that the universe is not erratic, but well planned, interlinked and operates in rhythmic manner. Every object in the universe is under the continuous influence of every other object. Recent developments in astronomy like black hole, dark energy, solar flare etc help us to understand the physics behind the universe better. The deeper we analyze, the stronger becomes the belief that there should have been a creator of the universe.

Earth is under influence of numerous heavenly bodies, particularly the sun and other planets in the solar system. Tides, earthquakes, weather conditions and every physical phenomenon on the earth are due to these influences. It is not surprise that the planets influence man on earth, since human body is made up of earthly matter like water, iron, calcium etc. The study of planetary influence on human affairs is called “Astrology” (Aster- star, logos-science). Thus, in contrast to modern thought ‘astrology’ is not superstition or magic but the combination of maths, physics, medical science, geography and so on.

Astrology had been an ancient part of ancient Hindu culture, a fact to be realized up on. Before Galileo could prove earth to be a sphere, Newton could discover the gravitational effect, and Kepler could formulate the laws of planetary motion, it was Maharishis of India who had viewed the solar system as it did exist with their power of ‘yoga’.

Let us see some of the facts that stand as proof of astrology. It has been observed that like earthquakes usually occur in full moon or new moon day combined with certain planetary combinations. It has been also noted that the appearance of comet correlates to earthquake. In 1531, the appearance of Halley’s Comet was coupled with Lisban earthquake. It is interesting to note that during the reappearance of this Halley’s Comet in 1682, there occurred earthquake in Catana. The origin of the dreadful disease, ‘SARS’, is mainly attributed to the deadly combination of Saturn and Rahu.

There are evidence in the history, of astrologers having predicted the nature of death Alexander the great, Julius Caesar and Napoleon. The predictions of Dr. B.V. Raman, during the World War II, were astonishingly true. There are very many facts that prove that astrology can withstand the test of time. Astrology mainly helps to improve one’s self confidence by eliciting the positive aspects in the horoscope.
Interpretation of one’s horoscope depends on the Astrologer’s skill; of course it is not an easy job without lot of study and experience. If some predictions go wrong it is solely due to astrologer’s misinterpretation and not that astrology is defective. The purpose of this writing is not to bring in belief on astrology but to make you think rationally before rejecting any conventional belief. Please kindly post your comments and suggestions.

Looking life differently

Recently I read the book titled “Looking life differently” written by swami sugabonandha. Really it teaches me to look the life in different perspective. Let me give the epitome of the book. He betrays the secret of happy living by being in present. Suddenly a question arises in everyone’s mind, we aren’t in present? The answer is a small yes and a big no. To make it clear, ask yourself whether we are doing a job without a chattering about past or future in our mind. Don’t stop, keep reading there is nothing wrong if the answer to the above question is no, but we have to practice to being in present. I have noticed some people who simply drinks coffee without aware of it being a tea. So what is the observation, the person simply chatters his past or future in his mind and thus missing the present. Here swamiji gives a good example; a person asked a saint ‘what is the difference you felt after becoming a saint? The saint answered politely “I used to take bath, eat, work, etc. Even now I am doing the same, but now I eat when I am eating, I feel the nourishment of nature while bathing; I feel sense of silence when I sleep”. So what is the observation here, the saint is living in present.
What happens when you see the mirror, it shows the present, It won’t show a cup of coffee in your hand that you had10 minutes before. Our mind should be like a mirror which always shows the present. Next question in all minds would be ‘is past and future aren’t important?’ Of course both are very important. Be present in the past so that we can learn from mistake; be in present so that we can plan for future, be present in future to gain experience because future becomes past another day. Just I have given the epitome of his teaching, by reading his books you will learn many more. I hope everyone will look life differently.
